Physical activity recommendations

Every physical activity counts! Because any activity is better than none and it’s never too late to take the first step. Exercise and sport are important for physical and mental health and performance capability across all age groups.

Any increase in physical activity brings additional health benefits. Physically active people live longer. They are also more mentally agile in old age and need less care. Regular exercise improves fitness, quality of life, mental well-being, quality of sleep, bone health and helps manage body weight, one of the risk factors for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.

The Swiss Health and Physical Activity network hepa.ch publishes and regularly updates the physical activity recommendations for Switzerland. The Federal Office of Public Health FOPH supports this network in conjunction with the Federal Office of Sport FOSPO, the Swiss Health Promotion Foundation (Stiftung Gesundheitsförderung Schweiz) and the Swiss Council for Accident Prevention BFU.

The physical activity recommendations contain target group-specific recommendations for infants, toddlers and children under the age of five, children and adolescents (aged 5-17), adults (18-64), older adults (from the age of 65) and for women during and after pregnancy.
